2. Stop The Killing At Caddo Parish, Louisiana
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:

BACKGROUND (edited for length):
5/19/08: Caddo Parish Animal Control in Shreveport, Louisiana used to get as many animals adopted out as possible. Annette Lewis' emphasis on adoptions and working with local rescues saved a lot of animals. Since taking over as Director, Matthew Pepper has changed the shelter's direction, turning it into a virtual slaughterhouse.

Between 5/5/08 - 5/16/08, they euthanized over 300 animals. On 5/13/08 they euthanized 78 animals in one day. They use no sedation, and frequently not the right dosage, as animals are found alive in the freezer, quite often. The same person does the euthanasia.

I was told that there was a cat and her kittens euthanized right in their kennel, just left there, and are still there! There is a small "Benji" type puppy that rescue was told would be put down because of parvo. When it was pointed out the puppy is not sick, they said that the puppy was not friendly and could not be adopted.

There is a mama mixed breed dog (approx 30 lbs) and her 5-week-old puppy who are under orders to be put down, for no apparent reason. There is a Pit puppy under orders to be killed because the dog is a Pit.

The shelter director ordered no more dogs treated at the vet. If a dog gets sick, the dog gets euthanized. They recently interviewed for a new rescue/adoption coordinator. A local rescuer familiar with the shelter was trained on a volunteer basis by Annette Lewis to be prepared to accept this job if offered. She was denied the position solely because of previous attempts to steer the shelter on a good track. She was told they were afraid that if she saw something she didn't like, she would engage in activities of this type again! Help us get the word out that this change in policy needs to stop:

3. UK: "Healthy Eating" Trend = More Animal Testing
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
T. Gallett, London, England, tony.gal001@ntlworld.com

BACKGROUND (edited for length):
The trend for healthier eating has led to an increase of 368% in the number of laboratory experiments conducted on animals for food additives, sweeteners and health supplements. In fact, food products are being tested on animals even though they are already being used by consumers.

These tests, when they involve natural ingredients such as raspberry juice and cabbage, cannot be for safety purposes. Health benefits of such foodstuffs are well known and documented and little more useful information can be learned this way.

CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:
It is important that the government knows the wishes of the British people. Early Day Motion (EDM) 4, calls on the UK Government to stop granting licences for experiments for additives and other foodstuffs. If you want your MP to sign this EDM or want further information, visit: www.vote4animals.org.uk/edm4.htm

SAMPLE LETTER from [not identified in original alert]
Dear Sir/Madam,
You may not be aware that Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) is the world's most exposed animal testing laboratory. HLS has been caught on film several times committing acts of cruelty in the US and UK. They've been caught punching beagle puppies and cutting open primates without pain killers. They've been exposed for shoddy work and falsified data. During a study on wild caught baboons HLS broke the law over 520 times but was never prosecuted.

Last year, a senior scientist from HLS in the US filed a lawsuit claiming he'd been pressured into falsifying data. This is a sham of a company with a poor reputation. I think you would not like to be associated with HLS.

I don't expect you to take my word for it, but you can see the cruelty yourself, as shown on national TV:
www.shac.net/HLS/exposed.html. For other exposes into HLS, see: www.shac.net/MISC/Inside_HLS.html

I urge Healthinvest Partners AB to stop dealing with a lab involved in such horrific animal cruelty. Thank you for your time. I do hope you will reconsider your position and not hold shares in HLS.

Yours sincerely,

5. Stop Korea From Legalizing Dog Meat
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:

BACKGROUND (edited for length):
Anger as Seoul aims to reclassify dog meat, www.admh.org/data/kimhs.htm
4/8/08: The Seoul city government seeks to classify man's best friend as livestock in order to set food safety standards for South Korean lovers of dog meat. Between two and four million dogs are estimated to be consumed in South Korea every year but slaughtering and processing are carried out in dirty environments that pose risks to diners' health, officials said...

"Dogs are consumed in their millions in this country every year. That's a fact. We have to take care of this situation," Lee Hae-Woo, head of the city government's department of food safety, said. "We plan to recommend to the central government that dogs are classified as livestock..."

South Korea's capital has always been ambivalent about dog meat. To avoid adverse publicity before the 1988 Olympics, the city banned dog meat and snake meat as "abhorrent food." The order is now largely ignored and an estimated 500 dog meat restaurants operate in Seoul alone. The reclassification proposal sparked angry reactions from animal activists....

"No other country in the world but South Korea gives a legal green light to dog meat consumption," the Korea Association for Animal Protection said in a statement. "South Korea's motto is globalisation but it seeks to go back to the Stone Age as far as dog meat consumption is concerned." Lee Won-Bok, association president, said if the proposal became reality, dog meat consumption would increase drastically.

SAMPLE LETTER from Zelda Penzel, zpenzel@nyc.rr.com
Honorable President Lee Myung-Bak, Honorable Mayor Oh Se-Hoon:

The civilized world is shocked by news that South Korea is planning to classify dogs as livestock. Appeals from compassionate people everywhere to end the consumption of dog meat, seem to have fallen on deaf ears in the past, but we pray that as the new President of Korea, you will be open to reason and appeals from caring and concerned people around the globe.

Throughout the world, dogs and cats are considered to be companion animals; they have evolved through millions of years of evolution and, in modern times, through selective breeding, to be loving, affectionate, protective and faithful family members. Their gifts of pre-cognition and a superior sense of smell, hearing, etc. have made them invaluable companions to blind, deaf, sick and handicapped people. They have made extraordinary contributions in times of war, natural disasters and even as K9 units helping law enforcement in the wars against terror, drugs and illegal trafficking. Their natural and intuitive instincts have helped to save lives, find lost children and because of their readiness to please, to bring companionship, devotion and affection to the old, lonely and afflicted.

Dogs are not livestock or commodities. They are living beings, capable of suffering and pain. Surely, South Korea does not want to be seen by modern nations as a culture that is backward, barbaric or uncivilized, one that will be shunned by tourists, businesses and consumers worldwide. Rather than taking measures that will result in the sanctioning and consequently, the expansion of the dog-meat industry, we urge and implore you to take every action possible to educate, legislate and enforce laws against the vile and hideous practice of eating dogs or exploiting them in any cruel and inhumane manner. Citizens around the globe await your response.

Respectfully,

8. GUESS Brand Sponsors Bullfighting - Algarve, Portugal
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Miguel Moutinho | ANIMAL, miguel.moutinho@animal.org.ptinfo@animal.org.pt

BACKGROUND (edited for length):
The brand GUESS is constantly involved with bullfighting in the Algarve, Portugal. Bullfighting activity in the heavy tourist Algarve region is mainly held in Albufeira, a popular beach town where the Albufeira Bullring annually hosts one bullfight per week from May to September... At the Albufeira Bullring, there is a GUESS? Store — a permanent sponsor of pretty much all bullfights that occur there.

CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:
Ask GUESS? Inc. USA corporate headquarters to take action so that the brand is no longer associated with bullfighting: customerservice@guess.com • COPY (Cc): campanhas@animal.org.pt

SAMPLE LETTER from miguel.moutinho@animal.org.pt
Dear Madams / Sirs,

The shameful bullfighting activity in the Algarve region, in Portugal, is mainly held in Albufeira, one of the most popular beach towns in the region. Every year the Albufeira Bullring hosts one bullfight per week from May to September, trying to attract tourists to watch these medieval shows.

At the Albufeira Bullring, there is a GUESS? store, which is a permanent sponsor of pretty much all bullfights that occur there. The presence of this store constantly associates your reputed brand with the economic and commercial support of bullfighting.

Bullfighting tortures bulls (at least six bulls per bullfight) just for entertainment. In the European Union, this brutal activity is only lawful in Portugal. In Spain and France it has lost its popularity and social acceptance. In Portugal in particular, where this GUESS? store promotes and sponsors bullfights, recent polls show the majority of the Portuguese public want bullfighting formally banned by Parliament. Foreign tourists attracted to the bullfights taking place at the Albufeira Bullring usually leave after a few minutes, disgusted and shocked with the violence towards animals.

I urge GUESS? Inc. to clear its name and image in Portugal. Please stop this local store from using your brand to promote and/or sponsor bullfighting. I look forward to your reply and thank you in anticipation for your attention.

9. 14-15-Year-Olds Hunt Big Game? Stop This Now.
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Forwarded Message: Zelda, zpenzel@nyc.rr.com
Original Message: jain 4 animals, ddb_dunkirk@yahoo.com • Mary Max

BACKGROUND:
Whether you live in NY or not, please take a moment to write... Some bad news: State Senate Bill 1284, which will allow 14- and 15-year-olds to hunt big game with firearms under mentored conditions, passed the State Senate with overwhelming support! Its companion bill in State Assembly, A733a, now sits in the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. If this bill passes here, bad news will turn into horrible news! We must stop it now!

CONTACT INFORMATION / TAKE ACTION:
Write a postcard/brief note to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Urge him to use his authority as leader of [NY] State Assembly to DEFEAT Bill A733a:
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver
250 Broadway, Room 2307; New York, NY 10007

NOTE: It's very important we send a written note because Silver's office is getting bombarded with notes from hunters who want the bill passed.

TALKING POINTS, from Mary Max:
1. Most accidental deaths occur while hunting deer and bears. These bills invite children into the "big game" arena.
Youths are not permitted to marry, drive, or drink alcohol at age 14. NY State should not allow youths to handle
weapons... Even with a "mentor" by their side, children can be impulsive and lack sound judgment.

2. Post Standard, Syracuse, NY (3/2003) reported: According to the Department of Conservation, the firearms injury
rate per participant is relatively high among the youngest hunters compared to other age groups.

3. Some children who are familiar with weapons tend to use them readily for suicide and/or shooting sprees in schools.
