2. Dogs Demand A Rescued Presidential Pooch
PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA SAID:
"With respect to the dog, this is a major issue. I think it's generated more interest on our website than just about anything. We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic. On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So whether we're going to be able to balance those two things I think is a pressing issue on the Obama household."

Dear President-Elect Obama,

We thank you for your decision to add a dog to your family, and for considering rescue as an option. You've expressed concern that due to your daughter's allergies, you may not be able to adopt from a shelter. In fact, animal shelters are full of "hypoallergenic" dogs who are perfect for the First Family. Please give a Presidential pardon to a shelter dog, and inspire millions of others to save a pet's life by adopting!"

Sincerely, (Your name / address / city, state, zip)

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THE STORY OF BABY:
During the campaign, then-Senator Obama promised his daughters they would get a dog after the election. This made lighthearted news after the President-elect mentioned it in his acceptance speech, but there is a tragic side to the story, due to a special 3-legged dog named "Baby" who found her way into Barack Obama's arms when he was a newly elected Senator... The public promise to adopt a rescue dog is unprecedented for a First Family, and has the potential to strike a crippling blow to one of the cruelest industries imaginable — dog breeding — an industry that costs taxpayers billions. Most Americans aren't aware that their hard-earned tax dollars are squandered to the tune of billions a year on animal control due to pet overpopulation...

SAMPLE LETTER BY FARM SANCTUARY
Kinship Circle did not write this sample letter
Dear President-Elect Obama,

The Obama Administration has promised change — something desperately needed in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I write to urge you to appoint a Secretary of Agriculture who supports humane agricultural policies and will guide the Agency in a new direction, one that includes sustainable, organic farming and healthy, plant-based diets available to all Americans.

Millions of farm animals are annually subject to industrialized production and slaughter, yet few federal laws govern their treatment. For too long our food policies have been driven by harmful industrial animal agriculture and subsidies to wealthy meat and dairy interests. It is time for the USDA to focus on healthy, sustainable and compassionate systems of food production.

Please appoint a Secretary of Agriculture with a vision for healthy people, healthy animals and a healthy environment. The treatment of animals matters to Americans and it should matter to the USDA as well.

Sincerely, (Your name / address / city, state, zip)

TALKING POINTS BY BRIAN VINCENT

• Urge President-Elect Obama's administration to end Wildlife Service's aggressive and expansive lethal control of "carnivore" wildlife.

• Every year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services kills millions of animals, including thousands of native carnivores.

• USDA Wildlife Services employs a host of cruel — and largely ineffective, expensive, and unnecessary — methods to kill coyotes, bears, cougars, wolves, and other wildlife. Animals are shot, poisoned, gassed, trapped, snared, clubbed, pursued by hounds, helicopters, and planes, and lured to bait stations where they are gunned down.

• Dogs, cats and other animals are unintentionally injured or killed. In 2007 alone, Wildlife Services killed 2.4 million animals, including 121,565 Carnivores.

• Wildlife Services kills wild animals for such minor offenses as wandering onto private property, eating pet food, and digging in gardens. Thousands more are killed to mollify agribusiness, even though non-lethal measures, such as installation of proper fencing, strobes, and motion detector devices, are often effective in preventing conflicts.

• Carnivore numbers are also "culled" to boost "game" species for hunters.

• In addition, these animals are frequently targeted out of hysteria perpetuated by some government agencies, hunters, and development interests. Yet, it is usually irresponsible human behavior that leads to conflicts with wildlife.
