Chile Earthquake

Tracie Dawson and Ron Presley, Chile, (c) Kinship Circle

Forgotten.

Kinship Circle Disaster Animal Response Team travels Chile's ravaged coast to rescue, treat and feed animals, some 700,000 or more harmed in an 8.8 earthquake. After the quake, tsunamis roar ashore, flattening seaside towns and displacing 2 million people. Aftershocks last for months. Some displaced people live with animals at evacuee camps.

Over four months, Kinship Circle partners on the ground with Socorro Animal Chile (SACH), a coalition of Chilean animal organizations and veterinarians. We send our disaster animal responders to the Eigth Region of Bio Bio, a vast coastal span that runs north and south of Concepcion. In January, yet another earthquake strikes Chile, about 43 miles northwest of Temuco (U.S.G.S.), some 150 miles north of Concepcion. Kinship Circle quickly contacts Chilean colleagues for damage assessment about the 7.1 quake. They report power and water outages, but no causalities yet. Contacts near the quake's epicenter in Temuco are okay, but we await news from Tirua — a seashore village where Kinship's Sister Michael Marie and Bonnie Morrison reunited with Socorro Animal Chile veterinarians this summer, to assist in ongoing aid clinics for quake-tsunami harmed animals. We hope, as a Chilean colleague states, that animals rode out this latest earthquake unharmed. While in Chile with SACH, Kinship Circle conducts: Search and Rescue & Field First Aid; Traveling Emergency Veterinary Clinics; Food/Supplies For Animlas At Tent Camps, In Field; Support: Vaccination, Sterilization, Adoption.

Kinship Circle is an all-volunteer Disaster Animal Response Team, activated by request when disaster-area resources are overwhelmed. We work in agreement with officials and nonprofits to offer skill, stamina and leadership — in a spirit of cooperation that best serves animals. PLEASE DONATE. Your kind gift lets us go where animals are left behind!

In kinship, not dominion, each individual is seen. We do not use the rhetoric of slavery. To define animals as unique beings Guardian, Caregive, Him/Her/They… replace Owner, Own, It… Until moral equity and justice serve all — no one is free.
