A BAN ON EUROPEAN CAT AND DOG FUR IS NOW FULLY ACTIVATED
6/21/07, THE FACTS BEHIND THE CAT AND DOG FUR TRADE-Thanks to all who wrote MEPs and non-Europeans who contacted EU officials. The gaping loophole that permitted trade in fur from cats and dogs not specifically killed for their fur has been closed. The Committee on Internal Trade had sought to expand the dog definition to cover "raccoon dogs," wild dogs unrelated to raccoons but named for their thick coats. Despite a USA effort to cover raccoon dogs, only cats and subspecies canis lupus familiaris (domestic dogs) gained protection in Europe. After 1/1/09 imports of cat- dog fur into the EU should cease, but it falls upon each member nation to enforce. Chinas outlet will diminish, yet not enough to stamp out the trade. Apart from Chinas own market of 1.3 billion buyers, many more countries remain customers. Full European Parliament text of cat-dog fur ban. proposal to ban
import, export and sale of cat-dog fur. Evidence reveals cat-dog fur is usually undeclared and disguised as synthetic or of vague origin. Most is
imported from third countries, notably China where companion animals are raised for this purpose. Many Member States have introduced their
own
legislation in response to strong opposition from consumers. However divergent national bans can cause disruption in the internal market. The
proposed Regulation addresses citizen concerns and creates a harmonized approach, prohibiting all production, marketing and import-export
of cat-dog fur in
the EU. It also establishes an information exchange for detection of cat-dog fur. SOURCE: European
