\r\n\r\nUPDATE: Michigan Shelter Stops Sending Its Animals \r\nTo \r\nResearch \r\n

\r\n\r\nJAN 2012 - Mecosta County Animal Shelter in Michigan will no longer hand over \r\ndogs to Class B \r\n\"random \r\nsource\" dealers, notorious for selling one-time companions to research labs. Kinship Circle’s original \r\nalert asked Mesta County Commissioners to ban the practice of selling pound dogs and \r\ncats to \r\ndealers for abbreviated lives of misery as \r\nexperiment subjects.\r\n

\r\n\r\nKinship Circle, together with tireless Michigan animal advocates and other groups, \r\nexplained the \r\ncruelty behind pound seizure and why \r\nanimal \"specimens\" subjected to toxic dosing, invasive surgery, amputation… fail to \r\nadvance \r\nmedical discovery.\r\n

\r\n\r\nMonths before Mecosta Commissioners confirmed a ban on future contracts with Class B \r\ndealers \r\n(activated July 1, 2012), Physicians \r\nCommittee For Responsible Medicine filed a complaint with U.S. Department of Agriculture \r\nthat \r\nprompted the agency to investigate the \r\nMecosta animal shelter. The probe revealed over 140 dogs sent to Class B dealers in \r\n2010.\r\n

\r\n\r\nFROM PCRM: \"It looks like the shelter operators could not handle the pressure. In \r\nJanuary, they \r\nannounced to county commissioners that \r\nthey would retire at the end of their current contract. The commissioners then confirmed \r\nthat pound \r\nseizure will be prohibited in all future \r\ncontracts, and that carbon monoxide gassing of animals will no longer be allowed. \r\nMichigan animal \r\nadvocates are currently planning a new \r\nshelter where the focus will be on animals’ well-being, not on profits.\"\r\n

SAMPLE LETTER 1: Pound Seizure in Mecosta \r\nCounty, Michigan\r\n

\r\nDear Mecosta County Commissioners:\r\n

\r\nI am deeply disappointed to learn that Mecosta County sells the pound’s \r\nhomeless animals to research dealers. I am among the majority \r\nwho oppose the practice of \"pound seizure,\" in which unclaimed dogs and cats are sold \r\ninto abbreviated lives of misery.\r\n

\r\nBehind the locked doors of a research facility, they are gone forever. It is \r\nimpossible to track a lost or stolen animal once s/he is reduced to a \r\nspecimen for toxic dosing, invasive surgeries, radiation, electric shock or other \r\nexperiments.\r\n

\r\nAnimals in shelters are already stressed by loneliness and boredom. Pound seizure is \r\nthe ultimate betrayal for these animals, many of whom \r\nwere or could have become beloved companions. In addition, statistics indicate a \r\nprofit-motivated increase pet-theft rings whenever shelters \r\nmarket their homeless animals.\r\n

\r\nOf the estimated 70 million animals used in redundant and often immaterial \r\nexperiments, the bulk of the cats and dogs come from breeders, \r\nshelters, pounds and \"bunchers\" who run \"Free to a good home\" ads to collect litters \r\nor other animals from \r\nunsuspecting guardians. Sometimes the animals are trapped and stolen. \r\n

\r\nTaxpayers annually supply more than $8.5 billion for wasteful and duplicative \r\nexperiments. Pound seizure promotes animal testing and \r\nstalls the pursuit of credible, proficient and humane technologies. Many researchers \r\nadmit that it’s impossible to extrapolate animal \r\ndata to humans due to genetic, anatomical, histological, physiological, and \r\nimmunological disparities between species. In fact, animal studies \r\njeopardize human safety. The U.S. General Accounting Office found that over 50 \r\npercent of animal-tested drugs are recalled or relabeled due \r\nto harmful repercussions in people.\r\n

\r\nMany research/development facilities now fulfill study requirements with non-animal \r\nresearch tools, including in vitro analysis, cell imaging, \r\nepidemiology, computer and mathematical modeling, genetics, clinical research, \r\nautopsy/biopsy studies, and advanced MRI imaging.\r\n

\r\nPlease do not support legalized abuse by supplying animals to research dealers. This \r\nonly allows vivisectors to squander more time and money \r\nthat could be spent on non-animal research modes relevant to humans. I respectfully \r\nask you to halt the sale of animals to research facilities.\r\n

\r\nThank you,\r\n
