Thanks And Woof! From Pia And Luna
In September, an original ARNO cofounder's Katrina dog, Luna, was hit by a car. Your support in response to Kinship Circle alerts helped Luna make it back from near death. Luna's grateful person, Pia Salk, gives updates.
11/18/06, Pia Salk ~ My father's favorite quote was, "When it gets dark enough you can see the stars." I never fully grasped the meaning until this terrifying ordeal with Luna. I now know what he meant. When times get really dark, light finds its way to you.
Your support has left me speechless. And if you know me, this is quite an accomplishment. You responded with kindness, assistance, compassion, comfort, and so much more. I cannot explain the depth of my gratitude. While Luna was in ICU, I'd visit her twice daily and just pray that she'd live. That I could watch her and Sweetie (her pit counterpart also from NOLA) gum each other on the couch. I wanted her to have more days like these, days she didn't get pre-Katrina.
Luna lived a feral life in treacherous habitat, survived the hurricane, was mistakenly loaded on a semi to Iowa, and then later flown to California. On Sept 18, a car struck her. Kind strangers who saw the collision saved her. Her injuries were grave with many complications. Once home, she endured weeks of tube feedings, a satellite around her head, crating and pain. Each pant or whine sent her neurotic human mom into a tizzy. Then she returned to ICU with a serious allergic reaction. Back home again, Luna and Sweetie shared a bout of kennel cough. Luna stayed bright and loving throughout. She taught me volumes. I love this little girl more than I can ever articulate.
Many of you raised funds to help Luna. I can't thank you enough. Your support helped lift some financial stress so that I could be more available to her. Luna now uses her back legs as she struggles to rebuild muscle mass. She walks like a little lamb and is a bit pigeon-toed in back but it's quite cute. She is less timid, greets people and lets them pet her, something I never thought would happen. It fills me with joy.
You are good people and the animals of this world are lucky to have you, as we are lucky to have them.
